Your first session

supineneck1First, we’ll discuss your health history, goals, and expectations. I will address any questions you may have about how I work and what we will try to accomplish together. Next, I will evaluate your body structure both standing and walking. You can wear your underthings, running shorts, and/or a sports bra during your evaluation.

After I make some assessments, you will lie on a massage table and I will use manual therapy techniques to release these strain patterns. A large part of my work is also helping to bring awareness to your own patterns and finding comfortable alternatives. You may be asked to stand and walk in the middle of our session so that I can monitor progress. At the end of the session, I may give you exercises you can practice at home.

Typically, Rolfing is done in a series of 10 sessions, each building upon the last (though I do single visit “fix-it” sessions and post 10-series work).  Each one can last anywhere from  75 to 90 minutes. I recommend scheduling 1 to 2 weeks apart. Every session has a corresponding theme, objective, and territory of the body that is explored. This makes each session like a lesson whereby you become more familiar with how your body works.

What is it like?

plantarwk4Most people wonder if Rolfing is a type of massage. It’s not. For many reasons massage is beneficial, but it is primarily for relaxation and working with muscles. Rolfing is concerned with relieving pain and raising the potential, and we work mostly with fascia, not muscle. Rolfers rarely use lotion on the skin.

Rolfing® generally feels like slow, deep pressure followed by a feeling of release. Sensations may range from pleasurable relief to temporary discomfort, depending on factors such as injuries or chronic stress to the afflicted area. I will start very gentle and work with you to find the right level of pressure. People often report feeling a sense of lightness and improved well-being after a Rolfing session.

“The great art of life is sensation and to feel that we exist.”
